Before Toto was formed the members of the group performed sessions for other musicians. David Paich, the son of drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all played on Boz Scaggsalbum from 1975 Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in the year 1976 as a result of the collaboration.
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an abrupt departure from the progressive sound of their earlier efforts and was criticized for its lack of hit singles. In 1985, the group's lead singer Fergie Fredericksen quit The band held auditions to find a replacement frontman. The band picked guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in the year 1986.
Toto released Toto XX in 1998 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the band. The group went through old tapes and recordings to create the album. The album was well-loved by fans and Toto embarked on the tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.
Shem Von Schröck replaced Leland Sklar as the drummer during the tour for the 40 Trips Around the Sun album. In 2017, Toto released a double-CD live album titled Falling in Between, which included recordings from the tour and an interview with Toto.

In 1983 the group released Toto IV, which earned them worldwide praise. The group embarked on the world to promote the album following its popularity. During the tour, lead singer Bobby Kimball was arrested on drug charges. At the end of the tour, the band decided to let him go and hire guitarist/singer Joseph Williams to take his place. David Hungate, the drummer, also left the group following the tour. Leland Sklar replaced him.

The museum's exhibits include toilets and faucets as well as tableware that have contributed to the growth of TOTO over the last half century. Toto has released a number of music videos. The band has released a number of compilation videos and DVDs. The most watched video by the group is "Africa" that has more than a billion views on YouTube. The video is set in a library with the band performing atop a stack of African books.
The track "Africa", from the album Toto IV, was written by the members of the band and was produced by David Pich. It was written by band members and produced by David Paich. It was a huge hit in Europe as well as other countries. The success of the single helped Toto gain popularity following their previous album, Turn Back, failed to chart in the United States.

In 1985, Fergie Frederiksen, Toto's drummer, quit Toto due to personal reasons. The group decided to hold an audition and ultimately chose Joseph Williams to replace Frederiksen.
Prior to and during the time of Toto's formation the members of the group worked as session musicians for a diverse variety of artists. Toto was founded following Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate and Boz Scaggs recorded Silk Degrees. Keyboardist Paich was regular on albums by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
In 1998, Toto began working on a special project called Old Is New. The album featured three new tracks as well as a number of completed recordings of old songs. The album was a global success and the band toured on tours to promote it.

Toto is famous for their hit single "Africa" The group recently joined forces to promote their upcoming album, All In. The album debuted on November 6, 2018, and included three songs from the upcoming 40 Trips Around the Sun, and also completed recordings of four other older tracks with Jeff Porcaro on drums and either Mike or Steve Porcaro on bass. The album also included the cover of Weezer's track "Hash Pipe" which the band opted to add after hearing a rendition on the radio.
