Before Toto was formed the members of the group performed sessions for other musicians. Toto was formed in the year 1976 as a result of the collaboration.

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked an abrupt departure from the progressive sound of their earlier efforts and was criticized for its lack of hit singles. In 1985, the group's lead singer Fergie Fredericksen quit The band held auditions to find a replacement frontman. The band picked guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in the year 1986.

Toto released Toto XX in 1998 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the band. The group went through old tapes and recordings to create the album. The album was well-loved by fans and Toto embarked on the tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.

Shem Von Schröck replaced Leland Sklar as the drummer during the tour for the 40 Trips Around the Sun album. In 2017, Toto released a double-CD live album titled Falling in Between, which included recordings from the tour and an interview with Toto.

In 1998, Toto began working on a special project called Old Is New. The album featured three new tracks as well as a number of completed recordings of old songs. The album was a global success and the band toured on tours to promote it.

Toto is famous for their hit single "Africa" The group recently joined forces to promote their upcoming album, All In. The album debuted on November 6, 2018, and included three songs from the upcoming 40 Trips Around the Sun, and also completed recordings of four other older tracks with Jeff Porcaro on drums and either Mike or Steve Porcaro on bass. The album also included the cover of Weezer's track "Hash Pipe" which the band opted to add after hearing a rendition on the radio.
